Cards to help build your credit history

Why is a Credit History Important to You?

Simply put, in order to get credit, you need a Credit History.  If you want to get a loan to buy a car, you need Credit History. If you want to buy online, in most cases you will need a Credit Card.  If you are planning to rent an apartment, you can expect a credit check as part of the process.  Cable companies and utilities will look for a satisfactory Credit History or require a security deposit.  So if you are starting out, building a Credit History is important to you.  So how can you get credit if you don’t have a credit history?

Ways to start building your Credit History

1. Apply for a Secured Credit Card: Many banks offer secured credit cards. With a deposit, from $250 to $500, you can obtain a Secured Credit Card. Your credit limit is the amount of your deposit.  It’s important with a secured credit card, that you pay your bills on time and leave you deposit money untouched. By doing that you will start to build a credit history of on time payments and credit usage.  In time you’ll be able to apply for an unsecured credit card and close your secured card.

2.  Get a store card or a gasoline card: Many large retailers and gas station brands will give customers a branded credit card even if you don’t have a credit history. They normally have small credit limits and higher interest rates.  And here’s the tip, make a habit of always paying that credit card off in full every month. Once again your history of paying on time and your credit usage will start to build even more.

3.  Pay on Time every month: This is your most important task – paying your monthly bill every month, whether it is the total balance or even the minimum required amount.  To be clear, if you miss payments or are late in making your payments you will be building a BAD credit history.  Your payment history is the biggest component of your credit score.

4.  Use less than 30% of your Credit: The second biggest component of your credit score is how much credit you are using.  Your goal should be to keep your usage below 30%.

5.  Maybe a Student Credit Card: Student Credit Cards are designed for young borrowers to help build their credit history.  Typically they have low credit limits and higher interest rates.  Make sure that you are confident you will have the money to pay off the related monthly bills and this card can also help to build your good history of on time payments and credit usage.
